Research engineer

DeepReason.ai – a spinout from the University of Oxford –  is building an innovative Knowledge Graph Platform which combines cutting-edge Ontological Reasoning with Machine Learning to draw inferences on big data. We are seeing strong commercial uptake in applications ranging from financial regulation, logistics, media, manufacturing to oil & gas.

You

You are a motivated research engineer, keen to apply your expertise to challenging real-world applications and scalable implementations of knowledge graphs. You will play an integral role in our team of experienced researchers and entrepreneurs, shaping the company in its early stage, with opportunities to grow and to shape the direction of the product.

Responsibilities

  • Software engineering in the field of Rule-based Reasoning, Knowledge Graphs and its applications. In particular, you will work on deploying rule-based reasoning to new scenarios and client applications. You will also develop the core reasoning system and extend it to fulfil new requirements.
  • Contribute to the development of research and system design documents and other technical reports.
  • Supervise and mentor new members of the team.
  • Attend appropriate scientific seminars and meetings and keep abreast with developments in the field.

Requirements

  • MSc or PhD degree in computer science or related field.
  • Good foundations in general computer science (data structures and algorithms).
  • Proficiency in software engineering in general, and Java in particular.
  • Ability to develop, maintain, and evaluate an information system, and to integrate software components.
  • Ability to manage own workload and interact well within a team environment. Plan and organise work independently to meet deadlines depending on programme and project priorities.

Desirable

  • Experience in software development of logic-based reasoning systems
  • Publication record in the area of logic-based reasoning systems.
  • Knowledge of database system design and implementation.
  • Experience with relational and non-relational database management systems.
  • Experience with build systems (Maven, Ant) and source control systems (git).
  • Experience with designing and invoking RESTful web services.
  • Experience with designing and running performance tests, creation of benchmarks and use of standard database benchmarks.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to San Francisco, US
